Students from three medical institutions in Quetta terminated their hunger strike and sit-in protest on Thursday night following successful discussions with the Balochistan administration.
The pupils were given a copy of the letter addressed by the Chief Minister of Balochistan to the Health Secretary by Commissioner Quetta Division Sohail Rehman. The Commissioner also paid a visit to the hospital, where he gave juice to five pupils who were fasting.
It’s worth noting that for the last three months, male and female students at three new medical colleges in Khuzdar, Turbat, and Loralai have been protesting against a decision by the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) to conduct new examinations for registration with the PMC.
When these medical colleges were made operational, around 600 students had been studying for three years, but the Pakistan Medical Commission approved them only a few months ago, thanks to the efforts of the provincial government and the support of senior army officials from the Quetta Institute of Medical Sciences.
The PMC, on the other hand, stipulated that these 600 pupils join with the commission after passing a new test, with only those who pass the test being registered.
Students protesting the PMC situation had set up a camp in front of the Quetta Press Club for the last 77 days, and five students had been on a hunger strike for the past eight days.
