The 47th President took the oath of office at the US Capitol to “preserve, protect, and defend” the US Constitution.
Donald Trump claimed to have ushered in a new era of American greatness just minutes after taking the oath of office for the second time. This was the culmination of an incredible political comeback that included two assassination attempts, a criminal conviction, and an indictment for trying to overturn his 2020 election loss.
“This is the beginning of America’s golden age,” he told reporters.
In the US Capitol, Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office to Trump, directing him to “preserve, protect, and defend” the US Constitution. Just in front of him, JD Vance, his vice president, took the oath of office.
Trump’s first priority is immigration and border security, and he intends to sign ten executive orders in his first few hours in office.
The president will declare a state of national emergency at the southern border, deploy armed forces there, and restore a process that mandates asylum seekers to wait in Mexico until their US court dates, officials told reporters.
Additionally, he would try to end the so-called birthright citizenship for children born in the United States whose parents are not legally recognized, which some legal scholars consider to be unlawful.
