ISLAMABAD (A News) – ISLAMABAD The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) conducted an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss conducting local government (LG) elections in Islamabad on December 31.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold the LG election on Saturday (Dec 31). The assistant attorney general started writing an intracourt appeal [review petition] in opposition to the IHC’s ruling.

According to sources, more than 14,000 polling staff members were teachers and workers of other departments on Christmas break, making it impossible for the ECP to administer the election.

Additionally, the IHC has ordered the ECP to conduct municipal elections in Islamabad on Saturday.

The ECP postponed the December 31 LG elections in the capital city owing to the government’s intention to increase the number of union councils (UCs) in the city. It noted that late revisions to the legislation by the government caused obstacles for the LG elections, adding that the ECP had published a timetable for the elections in Islamabad, but the high court ruled it null and illegal.
