According to Indian media accounts, the explosion happened when collected ammonium nitrate detonated, setting the police station on fire. Numerous cars parked inside the premises were also damaged by the fire.

According to early accounts, the bomb caused significant damage to some portions of the structure, and authorities warned that as rescue efforts continue, the number of fatalities may increase.
