Gary, Indiana (AP) According to Gary police, a 3-year-old kid found a revolver in his mother’s handbag and mistakenly shot his 2-year-old sibling, mortally injuring him.
Officers were called to a nearby hospital Friday night to investigate a 2-year-old gunshot victim. The mother informed authorities that her 3-year-old boy discovered the pistol in her handbag when she left a bedroom, and he accidently shot his younger sibling, who died as a result of his injuries.
The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is probing the shooting inside a Gary house.
“We conduct criminal investigations and then present the findings to the Lake County prosecutor, who decides whether it’s negligence or an unfortunate accident,” Gary Police Commander Sam Roberts told WLS-TV.
Gary Police Chief Anthony Titus and Mayor Jerome A. Prince both underlined the need of adults taking steps to properly lock firearms and other items that may “become weapons in the hands of innocent children.” They specifically advocated for the use of gun crates or gun locks to secure guns.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the loved ones of the two-year-old child who was so tragically taken from our community,” said Prince and Titus in a joint statement.
